Applying the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice: Simulation DesignTM to behavioral intervention development and research design

Abstract :

Introduction: Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best PracticeTM (HSSBP) provide evidence-based guidelines for simulation excellence; however, few resources demonstrate the “how to” of incorporating these standards in behavioral intervention development and research design. This abstract aims to demonstrate behavioral intervention and research design using the HSSBP framework in the context of a mixed-methods pilot study assessing the feasibility and acceptability of a novel educational intervention, Lift the Spirit. This intervention combined knowledge, role-play, and skills practice to increase nurses’ self-efficacy in conducting spiritual histories.

Methods: A purposive sample of nurses (n = 17; RNs = 14, APRNs =3) independently viewed an online educational module, synchronously role-played in dyads (nurse and patient) spiritual history scenarios using the Faith, Importance, Community, Address tool, performed a spiritual history with a Standardized Patient, and completed debriefing interviews. Measures included pre- and post-measures of Spiritual History Knowledge and Spiritual History Self-Efficacy. Pre/post outcome measures were analyzed using a Wilcoxon paired signed-rank test. Debriefing interview data were content analyzed using deductive coding derived from the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability.

Results: There were significant differences between pre and post knowledge and self-efficacy scores (p = 0.001). Qualitative findings supported feasibility and acceptability of Lift the Spirit; participants found the FICA© tool and role-playing particularly helpful. Participants found the educational course, skills performance, and scenarios helpful.

Conclusions: Preliminary findings suggested Lift the Spirit was feasible, acceptable, and positively impacted knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy. Measures performed as theorized. HSSBP was an efficacious framework in behavioral intervention and research design.
