Dr. Monica Beck is an Assistant Professor, tenure-track, at the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Since 2009, she has taught various clinical and nonclinical courses at the College of Nursing, primarily in the undergraduate program. She became the RN-BSN and Dual Programs Coordinator in 2021 and mainly teaches in this program currently. She values her role as an Academic Nurse Educator and is credentialed as a Certified Nurse Educator.
She earned her Ph.D. in Nursing at the University of Utah in 2021. Combining her love for oncology and spirituality, she developed a behavioral communication intervention, Lift the Spirit, to equip oncology nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to conduct spiritual histories with advanced cancer patients. Her goal is to build a program of research to improve health outcomes in the context of palliative, cancer, and spiritual care.
Her nursing career spans about 35 years, including 22 years of clinical practice in various areas, such as medical-surgical nursing, sleep medicine, radiation oncology, home health, and hospice. Oncology nursing is her passion. She is a member of the national and local Oncology Nurses Society and has maintained Oncology Nurse Certification since 2003.
Dr. Beck plans to continue teaching in the undergraduate program, mentor doctoral students and embark upon an oncology-focused research program. She enjoys the role of an academic as she loves to learn! She and her husband are very proud of their three daughters, two of whom pursued a career in nursing. Their youngest daughter is a secondary education teacher in history, another subject she enjoys.
