The Impact of Block Scheduling in Simulation on Faculty Development and Student Satisfaction

Abstract :

Background: Simulation is a teaching pedagogy and learning strategy that builds clinical knowledge and skills. Limited access to clinical sites and enrollment expansions are driving nursing programs to expand the use of simulation. However, simulation education requires different knowledge, skills, and competencies of faculty compared to traditional lecturing or clinical instruction. Using the Donabedian Structure-Process-Outcome Framework, the impact of block scheduling on faculty development (as measured by teaching knowledge/comfort) and student learning satisfaction with simulation were evaluated

Methods: Most often, faculty assignments align with unique course sections. Using block scheduling of 4-8 hours, changes in faculty knowledge/comfort and student learning satisfaction in simulation were evaluated over multiple semesters. Faculty teaching knowledge/comfort and student learning satisfaction were assessed with self-administered surveys containing open-ended questions and 5-point Likert scale statements. Faculty and students were surveyed twice each semester and changes in teaching knowledge/comfort and student learning satisfaction were evaluated.

Results: Survey response rates were 72% for faculty and 85% for students. Preliminary t-test analyses demonstrate improved faculty teaching knowledge/comfort and enhanced student learning satisfaction (p < 0.05) with simulation.

Conclusion: Changing faculty assignments from course sections to block scheduling (structure) created new opportunities to refine teaching, gain exposure to simulation application, teach students at different levels, and learn from certified simulation educators (processes). The use of block scheduling in simulation improves faculty knowledge/comfort and student satisfaction (outcomes). Future evaluations of block scheduling will include the assessment of other process measures (rigor and fidelity) and outcome measures (financial sustainability and student success).
