Abstract : A standardized process of curriculum development and review, combinations of multiple strategies including curricular templates and committee/expert review, was recognized as best practice for high-quality training (Cooke et al., 2020). Standardized simulation design provides a framework and template for developing effective simulation-based experiences for participants that can then be replicated across the entire simulation curriculum thereby ensuring each simulation-based experience is purposeful and effective (INASCL Standards Committee, 2021). This course aims to provide an example of the standardized process of curriculum development and review used by the Mary E. Mahoney Simulation Center at Houston Methodist Hospital. The scenario creation process will be broken down into 3 sections, Pre-work/Paperwork, Elements of a Scenario, and Best Practice in Sim Operations. After a brief explanation of each section, participants will be broken down into small groups to complete the corresponding activities.
Learning Objectives:
Define the elements needed to design a scenario based on best practice standards
Create templates to make the design process duplicable
Construct a step-by-step process for designing evidence-based simulation
