Dr. Turkelson joined the School of Nursing faculty at the University of Michigan-Flint in the fall of 2014. She has been a nurse for over 25 years and has extensive experience in critical care, management, and education. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Michigan-Flint, Dr. Turkelson practiced as a lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in critical care at Beaumont Health System, Royal Oak Michigan. Her interest in the use of simulation as a teaching learning strategy began in 2008 and since that time she has continued to cultivate her knowledge, skills, and expertise in this teaching pedagogy. Dr. Turkelson’s experiences have included both low and high fidelity simulations, in-situ experiences, large-scale community based disaster simulations, virtual, and standardized patient simulations. Dr. Turkelson has also had the distinctive honor of participating in the 2011 National League for Nursing (NLN) Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators and was one of the first Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators (CHSE) from the Society of Simulation in Healthcare. Recently, Dr. Turkelson participated in the first cohort of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) and CAE Healthcare Simulation Fellowship as well as the inaugural INACSL Research Fellowship 2016-2017. She is currently participating in the second cohort of the University of Michigan Interprofessional Leadership Fellows. The primary focus of Dr. Turkelson’s scholarship is simulation based educational research examining aspects of learning, interprofessional teamwork and communication, and patient safety. Dr. Turkelson and her team have been the recipients of several internal research grants as well as were the recipients of the INACSL, Chamberlain College & DeVry grant in 2017 providing continued support and expansion of their work in simulation enhanced interprofessional education.
