Mixed Method Evaluation of a Postpartum Hemorrhage Escape Room—A Multi-Site Study

Abstract :

Background: Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Proper management of postpartum hemorrhage requires both teamwork and communication to optimize outcomes.


Aim: The purpose of this research was to evaluate an escape room teaching strategy that engages baccalaureate maternity nursing students at two universities. The study explored the students’ experience with the escape room and its impact on their knowledge of postpartum hemorrhage, teamwork, collaboration, and safety.


Method: Using Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, a mixed method study was conducted with 85 nursing students at two universities in the Northeast. Participants completed a survey and attended one of 20 focus group debriefing sessions after completion of a postpartum hemorrhage escape room. Qualitative data was analyzed using Collaizzi’s framework and descriptive statistics were used to analyze survey results.


Results: 95.2% of participants identified the escape room helped with knowledge and skill acquisition. 97.6% said it fostered communication, learning, and the ability to provide safe patient care. 100% reported the escape room was enjoyable, an effective strategy for team building, and they would recommend it. Thematic analysis yielded six major themes: It was Fun!, Escaping to Learn: Building Knowledge and Confidence, No I in Team, Pressure Cooker, Big Picture, and Lessons Learned.


Conclusion: Escape rooms are an effective teaching strategy and valuable learning experience that can be used by nursing faculty to foster knowledge, teamwork, and safety with high satisfaction.
