Abstract : Learners today are from a more digital and game-based learning environment. In July 2022, it was noted that there were 1900 Escape Rooms in the United States which increased from just 24 in 2014. In education, the use of an escape room has been found to be a way to build skills through peer collaboration and teamwork in an active learning environment. Our College of nursing discovered a gap in the retention of skills learned from prior semesters. With simulation and game-based learning becoming more popular and innovative teaching methodologies, it was decided to develop a skill-based escape room to meet this need. Skills were identified including medication administration, IV medication titration, foley insertion, IV insertion, and medication calculation. Supplies needed were locked in various containers and skills were performed in order to get information to enable the unlocking of supplies needed to complete the next skill. A Qualtrics survey was done by the students at the completion. In this session I will explain the steps taken to create this skill-based escape room along with lessons learned, and student perspectives.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the benefits of a skill-based escape room
Describe the steps involved in setting up an escape room
Describe ways an escape room could improve active student learning
